Byungsik Hong is an experimental nuclear physicist studying heavy-ion collisions. He received B.S. (1987) from Korea University and Ph.D. (1995) from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in U.S.A. Before coming to Korea University in 1997 he was a research scientist at the Laboratory for Heavy-Ion Research (GSI) in Darmstadt, Germany.

Research Interests Quark-gluon plasma (QGP), Nuclear phase transition, Strong interaction or quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at extreme temperatures and densities, Quarkonium production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, CMS experiment at Large Hadron Collider (LHC), Spin structure of protons, PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), Structure of neutron star, Nuclear equation of state (EOS) and symmetry energy, Origin of heavy elements, Structure of rare isotopes, Development and application of particle detectors, Large-acceptance Multipurpose Spectrometer (LAMPS) at RAON (the first rare-isotope accelerator to be built in Korea).
